Le poker n’est plus seulement une affaire de Las Vegas ou de Macao

Poker is no longer just a Las Vegas or Macau affair. In recent years, Africa has emerged as a new territory for expansion for this strategic card game. From Senegal to Nigeria, including South Africa, the number of tournaments is multiplying. But while the momentum is real, the continent has yet to find a model to manage and structure this growth. And for many observers, Switzerland, with its clear regulations and flagship events, could serve as an inspiration.

The Need for a Structured Framework in Poker

Poker in Africa remains a young and unevenly developed field. Some capital cities, such as Dakar, have already established themselves with renowned casinos and large-scale events. But in many countries, the lack of infrastructure, the high cost of internet, and a lack of regulation still hamper the sector's growth. However, to move from a growing phenomenon to a sustainable industry, a solid legal and organizational framework is essential.

This is where the Swiss model is of interest. In Switzerland, poker has found a balance thanks to strict legislation that is also favorable to players and organizers. Tournaments are regulated by law, and licensed establishments guarantee transparency, security, and clear taxation. This stable environment has helped make Swiss poker a global benchmark, where professional and amateur players coexist in a reassuring environment.

Dakar, African poker showcase

Africa is no exception when it comes to casino gaming. Dakar, Senegal, is arguably the most successful example of a booming market. With its two main casinos, the Terrou-Bi and the Plaza, the capital attracts hundreds of local and international players each year. The Plaza even hosted a stop on the prestigious WSOP Circuit , marking a historic first in sub-Saharan Africa. These successes demonstrate that local initiatives can boost African poker's profile.

The emergence of an African scene in the casino world

Beyond Dakar, tournaments like the African Poker Championship are beginning to unite enthusiasts from across the continent. Figures like South African Raymond Rahme and Nigerian Ema Zajmovic are leading the way, proving that African talent can shine on the international stage.

But challenges remain: limited access to online poker platforms in many countries, urban-rural disparities in internet connectivity, and the scarcity of casinos outside of capital cities. Solutions are emerging, such as the rise of mobile, 5G, and satellite projects like Starlink, which could expand access to online casinos .

Switzerland, a model for the future of Africa?

If Africa wants to transform its current boom into a true sports and economic industry, the Swiss model deserves close examination. The legal framework, the quality of events, and the recognition of poker as a discipline in its own right are all points that could inspire African regulators.

With a suitable framework, solid infrastructure and the rise of local players, Africa has everything it takes to become the next poker El Dorado.
