Le prix du riz va-t-il vraiment grimper ? La réponse claire du Président de l’Unacois
Is the price of ordinary rice likely to rise in Senegal in the coming days? Since yesterday, Tuesday, a document bearing the insignia of the Ministry of Commerce has announced the suspension of the 10% customs duty on rice imports. This measure has not yet been confirmed by the state authority. The Directorate of Internal Trade, which we attempted to contact, has not responded. But, from the importers' side, the news is reassuring.
Moustapha Lô, the newly appointed president of the National Union of Traders and Industrialists of Senegal (UNACOIS JAPPO), reassured the Senegalese people. "This measure will have no impact on rice prices," the major importer stated, contacted by Seneweb.
He explains that the cost per kilo of this commodity has been set at 350 CFA francs by the authorities. This mainly concerns ordinary rice from Pakistan and India. The wholesaler buys Pakistani rice at 280 CFA francs and Indian rice at 290 CFA francs per kilo. "He is doing quite well selling at 350 CFA francs per kilo. So there will be no increase," Mr. Lô explains.
For him, the state is not wrong to take this measure. Because by waiving this tax in the past, the authority wanted to relieve households at a time when rice prices were high. "Today, with the decline in rice prices, it is normal for the state to reinstate the tax temporarily," he says.
