Le SYTRAPAS exige une "tolérance zéro" contre la pêche illicite et des indemnités de risque pour ses agents
Faced with the alarming depletion of fish stocks, the Senegalese Union of Fisheries and Aquaculture Workers (SYTRAPAS) is taking a stand to demand sustainable management of the marine environment. "Beyond defending the material and moral interests of workers, our mission is to ensure the long-term viability of Senegalese fishing," the union insists. For SYTRAPAS, the dangers are numerous and well-documented: overfishing, rampant pollution, climate change, and above all, the scourge of illegal fishing and the blatant disregard for existing regulations.
It is in this context of crisis that the union welcomes the efforts made by the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy in the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The organization emphasizes, however, that these actions are only possible thanks to the unwavering commitment of the ministry's staff who, despite often inadequate resources, carry out perilous missions to protect national waters.
Record seizures on the coast
The effectiveness of recent control operations demonstrates the scale of the challenge. Between February 14 and 15, 2026, no fewer than 15 carts of juvenile sardinella were intercepted in Joal-Fadiouth. A month later, on March 15, 15 pirogues loaded with juvenile fish were seized in Bargny and Rufisque. The most spectacular operation took place on March 18 in Mbao and the surrounding area, with the seizure of more than 3,100 bags of illicit processed products, valued at an estimated 38 million CFA francs. SYTRAPAS wished to pay tribute to these agents who, despite threats and physical attacks, continue to carry out their duties with exemplary professionalism.
The call for "zero tolerance"
Faced with this urgent situation, the union is making specific demands to ensure the sustainability of these results. It is calling for a substantial increase in logistical resources for decentralized services to intensify monitoring. On the social front, SYTRAPAS is demanding the allocation of a risk allowance for agents exposed in the field. Finally, the organization advocates for the continuation of a zero-tolerance policy towards those responsible for these practices that are devastating to the ecosystem.
In conclusion, the union congratulated the Minister of Fisheries, Dr. Fatou Diouf, for her firm commitment to fisheries sovereignty. Assuring the organization of its full support, SYTRAPAS issued a final call for unity: "Together, let's defend our fisheries, let's defend our future!"
