Le trophée de la CAN accueilli à Matam
As part of the "Trophy Tour" initiated by the Senegalese Football Federation throughout the country, the Matam region hosted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy on Sunday. The event, organized to allow administrative authorities, sports figures, youth, and the general public to share in the Lions' victory at the 2025 AFCON, was enthusiastically received by the local population.
Along the main roads of the regional capital, decorated in the colors of the nation, the atmosphere became electrified as the caravan passed by, arriving in the city at 11 p.m., thus being late for the scheduled arrival time of 6 p.m.
The procession, which departed from the entrance to the town of Matam, followed the road to the central market leading to the working-class neighborhood of Soubalo before reaching the Fadel intersection, the governor's office, and the departmental council headquarters. Next, it passed through the Gourel Serigne neighborhood, the HLM housing complex, and finally the regional cultural center where the trophy presentation ceremony took place. In attendance were the governor, the deputy-mayor, Mamadou Mory Diaw, several administrative and territorial authorities, elected officials, youth associations and women's groups, dignitaries and prominent figures, and a large crowd of spectators.
After a minute of silence observed in tribute to the father of the Lions' captain, Governor Said Dia expressed the region's pride in the Lions, the technical staff members, and also the members of the Senegalese Football Federation.
After the intervention of Abdoulaye Fall, president of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), which was strongly applauded, Pape Bouna Thiaw, the coach of the Lions, paid tribute to the players native to the region, Mory Diaw and captain Kalidou Coulibaly, whose commitment and bravery he praised.
In Matam, the AFCON trophy marked a warm stop, punctuated by a convivial dinner at the home of international player Mory Diaw.
