Les prisons explosent : les chiffres de l’asphyxie
The issue of prison overcrowding is not new. What is striking is that, despite the stated intentions of the authorities, the problem persists and is worsening. Senegalese prisons continue to be overflowing, much to the dismay of the inmates, who are suffocating, their families, and human rights defenders.
A 2024 report by the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD) reveals that Senegal's 37 detention centers house 13,685 inmates, while they are designed to accommodate 9,768. "An average occupancy rate that borders on suffocation and plunges inmates into dehumanizing overcrowding," notes L'Observateur, which analyzed the report.
The ANSD reports that the regions most affected by prison overcrowding are Kédougou (195%), Saint-Louis (178%), Dakar (166%), Kaffrine (160%), and Diourbel (159%). Among the prisons not yet at full capacity, the survey lists Sédhiou (93%), Fatick (91%), and Ziguinchor (56%).
