Lutte contre l’excision des enfants et jeunes: Le COSAED sensibilise des jeunes de Ziguinchor

The Collective of Organizations and Structures Supporting Children in Difficulty (COSAED) is raising awareness among young people about the need to get involved in the fight against female genital mutilation. This activity is taking place in conjunction with World Children's Day, celebrated on November 20th.

Alongside this day's events, COSAED members chose to address the issue of female genital mutilation (FGM), a scourge in the southern region of the country. Several young students and others gathered for a conference on the practice of FGM and its consequences for health and the associated risks.

"We decided to talk about female genital mutilation in the South. We know that it is a scourge that terrorizes girls and also traumatizes the female junta. It is a cultural practice within several families and one that we would really like to abolish in order to protect the young girl," said Awa Djiré, COSAED focal point in Ziguinchor.

To corroborate her statements, she explained that the excision of eleven young girls last March in Goudomp really resonated in the media.

Salimata Sarr, a young participant, called on the authorities to take decisive action against this scourge that has destroyed and continues to destroy the lives of many children and girls. This teenager urged parents, especially women, to protect their children from this phenomenon and to reject this practice regardless of the pressure they face.

Augustin Carvalho, a member of the national office of COSAED, calls on parents to take care of and look after their children.

"They must ban it," he exclaimed.

With this day, Augustin Carvalho believes it is a good opportunity to relaunch the activities of this collective of organizations and structures supporting children in difficulty in this southern part of Senegal, particularly the Ziguinchor region.

The traditions of the past weigh '.. like an incubus upon the brain of the living.’ FGM should, along with child marriage, prostitution, human trafficking, bride kidnapping, misogyny, virginity tests, being taught that menstruation is unclean, circumcision for non-medical reasons, caste/class, homophobia, as well as blasphemy as a crime, non-evidence based medicine & cock and dog fighting, be thrown in the dustbin of history!
