On the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child, Senegal hosted the "West and Central Africa Girls Summit" on October 10 and 11, 2025, a unique regional meeting organized by and for girls. Over two days, nearly 300 participants from 24 African countries took part in panels, workshops, and consultations focused on the rights, empowerment, and participation of adolescent girls.
Organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Family, Social Action and Solidarity, in partnership with UNICEF, this summit aimed to provide a space for expression, exchange and advocacy for young girls, who are often marginalized in decision-making processes.
A voice for girls, a force for tomorrow
In her speech, Minister Maïmouna Dièye reiterated the urgent need to create strong coalitions in favor of girls' rights. "It is time to build a united front, a true shield against all obstacles to the development of girls in West and Central Africa," she declared. She welcomed the regional mobilization around this summit, describing the initiative as "a strong signal in favor of a generation of conscious, active, and influential adolescent girls." The minister also emphasized that priorities must be clearly stated and assumed: "We must eradicate child marriage, female genital mutilation, gender-based violence, and above all, guarantee every girl equitable access to education, health, and social protection."
Commitments to be fulfilled
At the end of the summit, Minister Maïmouna Dièye pledged to take the agenda formulated by the girls to the highest levels of the Senegalese government and within regional authorities. "The agenda we are going to consolidate must be carried by the girls themselves. They are not just beneficiaries, they are the agents of change," she insisted. Now the challenge of implementation remains. Several NGOs present stressed the importance of moving from words to action, by funding programs, strengthening protection systems, training community actors, and ensuring regular monitoring and evaluation of the commitments made.

Domaram you bon yi
