Matam : 40 femmes formées dans la lutte contre les VBG
The Matam region has a 36% prevalence rate of gender-based violence (GBV), with multiple consequences for the lives of girls and women. Bany Touré Dramé, the regional director of Family, Social Action, and Solidarity, has raised the alarm on this issue and advocates for preventative actions through education and awareness campaigns led by women at the community level. The approach involves training gender champions who will play a crucial role in promoting equitable behaviors within their communities.
In this regard, a workshop on capacity building regarding gender-based violence, early marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM) trained forty women to deal with it.
According to Bany Touré Dramé, "the beneficiaries of the training will carry out advocacy and communication activities against GBV, early marriages and FGM among the populations".
To combat these scourges which constitute "a problem and an obstacle to the development of women in the Matam region", the forty women have committed to advocating with religious and customary leaders, women's organizations, youth associations (...) for a change in behavior including prevention and consideration of victims.
In addition to local awareness campaigns, beneficiaries will train members of their communities on topics related to GBV and FGM, said Ms. Dramé.
