Matam : Cheick Tidiane Dièye annonce des solutions structurelles contre les inondations
The Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, announced on Saturday, August 23, 2025, the implementation of structural solutions to put a definitive end to flooding. This announcement was made in the presence of several directors general of the ministry, local administrative authorities, and territorial elected officials, during a field visit to the construction sites of protective structures led by the prevention department in conjunction with military engineering.
Like several localities in the country hit hard by ravines, Thilogne has been running for several years behind the installation of structural protection works to counter the damage caused by two ravines that cross the city. The cuts caused by runoff water from the ravines, which have continued to negatively impact the ecosystem with risks to traffic, property and people, have been the cause of great damage through the destruction of houses and trees along the corridor.
At the municipal level, appropriate solutions have been adopted, in conjunction with military engineering, to reduce the flow and speed of the water, with the installation of speed reducers to stabilize the flow. "We have noted the work in progress, the embankments will be carried out in accordance with the rules of the art with the appropriate means and tools to ensure that the waters arriving in the city do not continue to attack the sides and walls which are made of soft soil," said the Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dieye, during the visit to strategic sites and structures. On site in the presence of the mayor of the city Mamadou Elimane Kane, he informed the population about the construction of a two (02) kilometer protective dike at the city level to combat rising waters. Adding that "this achievement, combined with what is being done in the context of water stabilization in the ravines, will lead to the establishment of major structural works which will secure and protect the locality from the ravages of flooding."
Program to secure localities against flooding
In Thilogne, the Minister renewed the State's commitment through "its new approach to governance which reflects proximity to the population, attentive listening, understanding of the grievances and pressing demands of our fellow citizens, and their immediate support as far as possible and within financial capacity."
While the heavy rains of recent days are fueling concerns, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye reassured the population about the mobilization of state services, noting the implementation of appropriate solutions, to move away from emergency procedures by building long-term structuring projects.
"We will do it everywhere in Senegal and everywhere in Fouta where the need is felt. This will be done with sincerity, because it is a question of correcting shortcomings of 60 years of existence. It will take the necessary time because we need to do serious work, large-scale and more structuring for the long term," he declared. To add: "Beyond Thilogne, there are also commitments that have been made. We have seen everywhere where there have been difficulties on the traffic routes, such as in Dembancané and Lobaly, that necessary arrangements have been made with Agéroute which will carry out work on the degradation of the road." According to the authority, all damaged sites and all places in Fouta where there are difficulties will benefit from adequate work.
"We have already started it in Tambacounda, in all cities it will be like this, from now on, it will be a question of moving towards sustainable solutions based on nature. Water must no longer continue to be a source of disaster for our populations. We will use it and retain it where it must be to be able to store it as long as possible and generate agricultural, pastoral and also fishing activities," he said. After having conveyed to the populations the greetings of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye reassured them of "the State's commitment to strengthening anticipation and prevention, while placing listening to communities at the center of public action, aimed at ensuring the safety of our families and our citizens, as well as the protection of their property against the risks of flooding."
Furthermore, in the opinion of the Minister of Hydraulics, "for the new authorities, it is not just a matter of counting the hundreds of millions or billions mobilized each year to spend without seeing the results. They demand to be in a logic of efficient results rather than in a logic of expenditure because efficiency is needed to solve problems."
