Matam : Hausse du prix du mouton, à l'approche de la Tabaski
As the Tabaski festival approaches, the markets are well supplied with sheep, with a variety of breeds dominated by the "Peul-Peul" and the "Touabir".
However, despite adequate supply, sheep prices are rising significantly, causing concern among low-income households.
At the Ourossogui livestock market, one of the largest markets in the region, prices are skyrocketing. Good quality sheep, formerly sold for between 75,000 and 80,000 CFA francs, are now being traded for between 125,000 and 150,000 CFA francs.
While prices for intermediate categories range between 60,000 CFA francs and 80,000 CFA francs, the minimum price for domestic sheep, the largest breed, is around 250,000 CFA francs and 300,000 CFA francs.
At the point of sale, there is not yet a great rush of buyers, especially customers from large cities outside who come to the region to stock up on sheep.
For Tabaski 2026, the estimated need for 45,000 sheep in the Matam region remains lower than local production. A portion of this production is exported to other regions of Senegal and to The Gambia. For the Eid al-Adha festival, local capacity is more than sufficient to meet demand, highlighting the importance of exports.
Indeed, the quantity produced in the region far exceeds its consumption. Last year, nearly 70,000 sheep left Matam for major cities like Dakar and Saint-Louis, but also for the sub-region, notably Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.
