Mbour, une seule maternité pour des milliers de femmes : L’appel des sages-femmes
For this new year 2026, the first baby born in the Mbour department is a girl. She was born at the Nguekhokh 2 district health center, thus symbolically marking the beginning of the new year.
This birth is part of an initiative by midwives in the Mbour department, an activity they have been carrying out for the past five years to celebrate the first birth of the year and highlight their essential role in the healthcare system. This year, these courageous women seized the opportunity once again, as giving birth would be a real challenge for many families without them.
Ms. Mboup Ndèye Togola, president of the midwives of the Mbour department, took advantage of the event to raise awareness of the many difficulties that staff face.
"We are facing a serious staff shortage. Out of about twenty midwives, only five are state employees. The others are community workers recruited by town halls or health committees, with very low salaries," she lamented.
She therefore appealed to the Minister of Health for a massive recruitment of midwives, particularly in the municipalities of the Mbour department. Ms. Togola also highlighted the inadequacy of healthcare infrastructure.
"In Mbour, there is only one health center and one hospital. There are many referral cases and treatment is difficult due to a lack of doctors and sufficient specialists. At the Mbour health center, the operating room has only one gynecologist, which does not allow for the coverage of all pathologies related to maternity," she indicated.
Mamadou Dia, the sponsor of this edition, an entrepreneur and political leader in Malicounda, echoed this sentiment. He made a solemn appeal to the Head of State and the Prime Minister to give special attention to the Mbour department.
"Many things are lacking in the health sector here in Mbour. Despite the competence and dedication of the doctors and midwives, the technical infrastructure remains insufficient. For a department with a high population density and a tourist focus, it is unacceptable to have only one hospital," he argued.
Beyond the upgrading of the Mbour hospital to a level 3 facility, Mr. Dia calls for the construction of a second hospital to meet the exponential population growth of the department.
The sponsor also presented various gifts to the happy parents, in an atmosphere of solidarity and hope for a better future for healthcare in Mbour. He also prayed that the new year and the first baby of the year would bring much success to the midwives.
