Migration irrégulière : 1 946 candidats interceptés et 32 pirogues saisies au premier trimestre 2025
In Senegal, the fight against irregular migration has shown its figures. According to the Interministerial Committee for the Fight against Irregular Migration (CILMI), 1,946 people were intercepted in the first quarter of 2025 while attempting to reach Europe by sea. Among these candidates, a majority are foreigners who have chosen Senegal as their point of departure, explained Dr. Modou Diagne, Comptroller General of Police and Permanent Secretary of CILMI.
He added that the defense and security forces also seized 32 canoes and dismantled several smuggling networks. No fewer than 74 people were brought before the prosecutor for participation in trafficking networks.
Furthermore, he points out that, compared to last year, the number of attempted departures is down. "The increased surveillance of the coasts is beginning to have an effect," said Dr. Diagne.
However, he stresses that "repression is only part of the answer, recalling that prevention and economic integration programs are also underway."
Furthermore, he specifies that "Senegal has set itself the objective of drastically reducing irregular migration by 2035, even if the authorities recognize that it will take time to stem a phenomenon that is more than twenty years old."
