Modernisation du secteur de la Pêche : La DER/FJ octroie 14 pirogues en fibre de verre aux pêcheurs sénégalais en Gambie
As part of the national policy for modernizing and securing the fishing sector, the General Delegation for Rapid Entrepreneurship of Women and Youth (DER/FJ) carried out a mission to Gambia from December 4 to 6, 2025 to officially hand over fiberglass canoes to Senegalese fishermen established in Gambia.
Fourteen modern fishing vessels, with a total value of 142,579,500 FCFA, were handed over to beneficiaries to enhance the safety and productivity of fishermen, while also contributing to environmental protection. This initiative reflects the DER/FJ's 2025-2029 Strategic Development Plan for the emergence of a modern, inclusive, and value-creating fishing sector.

This mission, which began with a visit to the Senegalese embassy in The Gambia before proceeding to the fishing pier for the official ceremony, is part of the ongoing program to renew the fleet of fishing boats, managed by the DER/FJ in support of the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy. To date, 127 fiberglass boats have already been funded in the six maritime regions of Senegal.

The Director General of DER/FJ, Dr. Aïssatou Mbodj, recalled that this handover of pirogues fulfills a promise made during her previous visit to The Gambia, where she met with Senegalese fishermen. "You expressed your need for better support, better organization, and better equipment to carry out your work in safe, modern, and sustainable conditions. I promised then to provide a concrete response. Today, we are making this commitment a reality through the official handover of fiberglass pirogues," she stated.

She emphasized the importance of this initiative, which reflects the government's commitment to the sustainable modernization of the fisheries sector. Dr. Aissatou Mbodj indicated that since its inception, the DER/FJ has mobilized over 16 billion CFA francs to develop fisheries and aquaculture value chains, supporting nearly 17,000 entrepreneurial initiatives, more than half of which are led by women. This funding, alongside efforts to formalize the sector (increased professionalization and improved governance), has enabled the establishment of economic units, fish farms, hatcheries, feed mills, ice plants, cold storage facilities, refrigerated trucks, and modern fishing boats. She also commended the significant progress made by the Ministry of Fisheries with the introduction of new digitized registration cards, an "essential tool for transparency, maritime safety, and monitoring the fishing fleet."

The Director General of DER/FJ also urged the beneficiaries to manage the equipment responsibly so that others could benefit as well. "Dear beneficiaries," she said, "I congratulate you and encourage you to manage this equipment responsibly, in the spirit of good governance, social cohesion, and the progressive formalization of your professional organizations. Exemplary management will guarantee the sustainability of this program and pave the way for new investments for new beneficiaries."

Speaking at the event, Her Excellency the Ambassador of Senegal to The Gambia, Ms. Marieme Sy, welcomed the presence of her compatriots and expressed her gratitude to the Gambian authorities for their support and hospitality. "This joint initiative of the DER/FJ and the Ministry of Fisheries aims to modernize fishing equipment in order to strengthen maritime safety and improve the profitability of fishing activities. The handover of these fiberglass canoes represents a significant step forward in this direction," she stated.

Pierre Mboup, coordinator of the Economic Interest Groups (EIGs) for the fishing wharf networks in Senegal, expressed his gratitude and urged the beneficiaries to repay the loans and respect the fishing charters established by the Gambian government. The beneficiaries, through their spokesperson Djiby Gueye, highlighted the advantages of these pirogues: faster, more flexible, safer, and more efficient. He assured the DER/FJ delegate that the loan would be repaid within the allotted timeframe.

These fiberglass canoes, which have a lifespan of over 25 years, were manufactured by the CFAO Group (CFAO Mobility), a strategic partner of the DER/FJ for this project. This partnership, established in 2020, aims to modernize Senegal's fleet of canoes, estimated at nearly 20,000, by providing innovative vessels adapted to the needs of fishermen.
