Mort d’un étudiant à l’UCAD : les organisations de défense des droits humains exigent justice
The Senegalese university community is in mourning after the death of Abdoulaye Ba, a medical student.
This death occurred during clashes between security forces and students at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) on February 9. Several human rights organizations denounce the disproportionate repression and call for an independent investigation.
A forceful police intervention on campus resulted in numerous injuries and the death of Abdoulaye Ba. The students were protesting against delays in scholarship payments and reforms deemed unfair in their allocation.
In a joint statement, Article 19 Senegal/West Africa, the African Meeting for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO), AfrikaJom Center, the Senegalese League for Human Rights (LSDH), and Amnesty International Senegal strongly condemn the "excessive use of force" and demand an independent and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the death. The statement adds that "the withdrawal of security forces from university campuses and the release of the arrested students are essential conditions for respecting university autonomy guaranteed by Law No. 94-79 of November 24, 1994."
Beyond the tragedy, the organizations are calling on the government to open an inclusive dialogue on reforming the scholarship system, in order to prevent recurring tensions from escalating into violence. "The university must remain a space for knowledge and freedom, not a battleground," the statement emphasizes.
