Pertes, fraudes, explosion de l’effectif…: Les chiffres qui révèlent la "grave" maladie de la Poste
The La Poste Group is in a state of near-total decrepitude. This Monday, during a ministerial council meeting dedicated to the company, revealing figures of the company's decline were unveiled. At the end of the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, the Prime Minister's office reported, in a document made public, that the analysis of the period 2012-2025 reveals a continued deterioration in the company's fundamentals.
For example, the workforce increased from 2,600 employees in 2012 to more than 4,100 nine years later. This represents an increase of nearly 60%. This, "without a productivity strategy or budgetary sustainability, resulted in an increase of more than 40% in the payroll even though turnover fell by 26%," the Prime Minister's office continues.
Thus, at the end of 2024, cumulative losses exceeded 100 billion FCFA, equity was negative by 156 billion and debt reached critical levels. "Even more worrying, deposits in customer accounts of Postal Checking Accounts and the National Savings Fund show a deficit of more than 9 billion, weakening customer confidence," the document states.
Adding to these financial difficulties are profound governance failures. Indeed, the same source reports, for more than fifteen years, "no external control was exercised over the Group and the financial statements were not published between 2013 and 2019." This has fostered opacity, preventing corrective measures from being taken.
"On the social front, cash flow tensions have led the State to take over the payment of salaries since October 2022, for an overall annual cost of 18 billion FCFA," reads the Prime Minister's document.
The Group, however, has strategic land assets, estimated at nearly 150 sites spread across the country. However, this capital remains underutilized and, for the most part, not registered in the company's name. "Its valuation could constitute a significant source of financing to support the recapitalization and initiate the Group's in-depth modernization," the authorities estimate.
The Prime Minister's Office reports that La Poste's subsidiaries "have not escaped this decline." For example, Postefinances has negative equity of over 17 billion CFA francs and documented cases of fraud of over 3 billion CFA francs. As for Ems Senegal, the company has lost strategic markets and seen its turnover collapse.
Today, an audit and investigations are underway. According to the Prime Minister's office, they will help to better identify the malfunctions and other failures that have hampered La Poste's expected performance.
