Pollution mortelle : Mbeubeuss relance l’alerte rouge sanitaire à Malika et Keur Massar

The Mbeubeuss site is once again at the heart of a worrying health crisis. Waste incineration has reportedly resumed, leading to a sudden and alarming deterioration in air quality in the Malika and Keur Massar areas.

According to Mamadou Fall Malcom, President of the Platform for the Protection of the Environment and Consumers (MBEUBEUSS DAFA DOY), the inhabitants live a daily ordeal: "from 5 a.m., the smell of smoke invades the houses, the people suffocate, the nights become impossible."

In a statement released to the public, Mamadou Fall Malcom warns of the direct impact of this avoidable toxic pollution on public health. "People with asthma, heart conditions, or respiratory illnesses are seeing their condition worsen. Children are particularly affected," he states.

The association's president believes this situation directly endangers public health and "violates Senegal's commitments to reducing emissions and protecting the environment." He describes the persistence of this situation in 2025 as incomprehensible, especially as countries strive for carbon neutrality and the preservation of urban ecosystems.

Faced with this “blatant attack on public health,” the Platform’s president is urgently calling on the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of the Environment. He demands immediate, concrete, and lasting action, including: the immediate order to completely suspend all incineration operations at Mbeubeuss; the launch of an emergency environmental and health investigation to determine the origin and extent of the emissions; the implementation of immediate protective measures for exposed populations (children, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses); and the presentation of an operational plan for the sustainable management of waste, consistent with the vision of a just, sovereign, and prosperous Senegal.

For Mamadou Fall Malcom, the health of thousands of families, the fundamental right to a healthy environment, and the credibility of Senegal's environmental commitments are all at stake. He concludes: "Silence or inaction would be incomprehensible and unacceptable. The people of Malika, Keur Massar, and the surrounding areas demand immediate, concrete, and lasting action."
