Prison de Mbour : Grève illimitée des détenus contre la détention préventive prolongée
Inmates at Mbour Prison began an indefinite strike on November 4, 2025. The movement aims to denounce the excessive length of pre-trial detentions and the lack of recourse to legal measures for sentence adjustment.
In a statement addressed to the authorities, human rights organizations, and the public, the detainees assert that many people have been imprisoned for several years without trial. Some even claim they are still waiting for their first hearing in the investigation.
The protesters are outraged by the systematic failure to use parole, provisional release and electronic tagging, which are nevertheless provided for by law.
They also believe that the application of the presidential pardon is "almost symbolic" and that the number of beneficiaries is "insufficient".
The situation of vulnerable people is at the heart of their demands: "We have among us sick people, elderly people and people with disabilities. The premises are not suitable and no specific support exists."
The prisoners feel that no favorable measures are being granted to them and denounce treatment which they describe as unfair compared to other penitentiary establishments.
The protest will continue until the Minister of Justice personally visits the prison, a condition deemed "non-negotiable." "We will not suspend the strike until the Minister of Justice is present at the Mbour Detention Center to hear our grievances," they declared.
The detainees are calling on the media, human rights organizations and civil society to report on their situation.
