Prostitution clandestine : 18 femmes interpellées, dont une séropositive
Alerted by an anonymous tip five days ago, the Cap Skirring gendarmerie raided a peripheral area of the tourist village where a clandestine prostitution ring was operating. Eighteen women were arrested, mostly of Nigerian and Sierra Leonean origin. One minor was immediately placed in the care of a child welfare agency. The other seventeen, all undocumented, were brought before a judge and remanded in custody yesterday.
The main concern involves one of them, who is HIV-positive and is being prosecuted for endangering the lives of others. According to sources cited by L'Observateur, she possessed pills that she took to reduce the risk of HIV transmission to her clients, but this did not prevent her from facing prosecution.
The group, prosecuted for illegal residence and lack of health records, will be tried on December 2nd.
This operation comes just days after the dismantling of another human trafficking network in the same area, illustrating the persistence and scale of the phenomenon in Cap-Skirring, notes the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group.
