Ramadan à Kolda : Le marché central affiche le plein de fruits et légumes à prix cassés
Ramadan in Kolda: The central market is overflowing with fruits and vegetables at bargain prices.
To the delight of those fasting, fruits and vegetables are readily available throughout Kolda's central market. Bananas, oranges, tangerines, apples, and dates (tandarmas) are offered at good prices, ranging from 500 to 1000 FCFA per kilogram. Most of these products come from outside the regional area. Kafountine, in the Bignona department (Ziguinchor region), and Dianah Malari, in the Sédhiou region, are the main sources of locally grown oranges, tangerines, and bananas, supplementing the supply of imported fruit.
During this blessed month of Ramadan, which coincides with the period of Lent, the central market of Kolda offers an ideal setting for healthy eating. According to Mamadou Cellou Diallo, a fruit vendor, prices are very affordable, allowing consumers to eat well when breaking their fast. The situation is similar for vegetables. Salads, cabbages, carrots, beets, and potatoes are sold at reasonable prices, both inside and outside the central market.
Met in front of her vegetable stalls, Khady Konté didn't hide her satisfaction: "It's really wonderful to come to the market and leave with a basket full of groceries because the prices haven't skyrocketed," she said. At the central market, located in downtown Kolda, fruit and vegetable vendors aren't complaining. With affordable prices, many customers have been stocking up daily since the start of Ramadan.
