The Ouakam gendarmerie brigade brought D. Kanté before the prosecutor's office on Friday. He is being prosecuted for quackery and theft. He is accused of having swindled a passerby out of all his savings using mystical methods.
The incident dates back to last September in the Sacré-Cœur neighborhood. The victim, S. Baldé, explains that he was approached by two individuals shortly after getting off a public transport vehicle. After a brief exchange of greetings, he says he felt "as if possessed," losing all control of his actions, reports Libération.
Under the influence of his interlocutors, the same source continues, S. Baldé allegedly went to a Wave service point where he withdrew his entire balance, 164,000 CFA francs, before handing over the money and his cell phone to the two men. He claims to have regained his senses only after they left.
On December 9, the newspaper reports, the victim happened to recognize one of the suspected perpetrators, identified as D. Kanté, in the Ancienne Piste area. He immediately alerted gendarmes on patrol, which led to the suspect's arrest.
During his hearing, D. Kanté denied the facts, but S. Baldé maintained his version consistently, leading to the accused being brought before the prosecutor.
