Saraya : 16 dragues illégales détruites sur le fleuve Falémé, deux individus interpellés
A major security operation conducted by the Senegalese Armed Forces has brought an end to illegal mining on the Falémé River. On Wednesday, December 25th, elements of Military Zone No. 4 destroyed sixteen (16) dredges in operation at Lingokhoto, in the commune of Missirah Sirimana, department of Saraya.
The operation, conducted as part of the fight against illegal gold mining and the preservation of natural resources, also resulted in the arrest of two Malian nationals caught at the site. The other individuals present managed to escape by crossing the river and taking refuge on the other side of the border.
The two people arrested were handed over to the national gendarmerie, which is responsible for continuing the legal proceedings in accordance with the laws and regulations in force.
According to security sources, these dredgers regularly crossed the border to illegally exploit the Falémé River on the Senegalese side, before quickly retreating into neighboring territory upon the approach of the Defense and Security Forces. This time, the military intervention caught them off guard, allowing for the neutralization of their operating equipment.
The operation has been widely welcomed by local communities, who have long denounced the harmful effects of these activities on the environment. Illegal gold mining is indeed accused of degrading river ecosystems and jeopardizing market gardening, the main source of livelihood for many local families.
Through this action, Military Zone No. 4 reaffirms its determination to combat the illegal exploitation of natural resources and to ensure the safety of the population as well as the protection of the environment in this border area.
