Saraya : Cinq individus interpellés, six pelles mécaniques saisies dans une zone minière sous suspension
The fight against illegal gold mining continues intensely in the department of Saraya. Members of the Saraya territorial gendarmerie brigade, engaged in a surveillance operation along the Falémé River, arrested five individuals in the villages of Satadougou, Bougouda and Fégola, located in the commune of Médina Baffé.
According to local sources, the individuals arrested—a Chinese national, two Ghanaians, and two Sierra Leoneans—came from Mali. They are suspected of having smuggled six excavators across the border to conduct illegal mining operations within the 500-meter coastal strip. This area is subject to an official mining ban due to environmental, security, and regulatory concerns.
The six heavy vehicles were immobilized in the bush and placed under the supervision of elements of the Rapid Action Surveillance and Intervention Group (GARSI), pending their transfer to the brigade.
This operation is part of the strengthening of the control system in this border area, which is particularly exposed to illegal gold mining networks.
An investigation has been launched to determine responsibility and the possible ramifications of this illegal activity.
