A few weeks ago, a photo of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye playing Scrabble sparked strong reactions on social media. While the image amused some, it also rekindled a debate: that of Scrabble's place in the Senegalese sporting landscape. A mind sport that has nevertheless given Senegal some of its greatest world titles amid almost total silence from the authorities.
Champions left to their own devices
Senegal is one of the most successful nations in the world in this discipline. To date, the Senegalese Scrabble Federation has won nearly fifty world awards, not including those collected at international festivals. These successes, often achieved without financial support from the state, are a testament to the dedication of passionate players who carry the national torch high.
Among these emblematic figures, a legend: Ndongo Samba Sylla. A true monument of French-speaking Scrabble, he is the Blitz world champion (2002), three-time world champion in Pairs (2000, 2007, 2016), vice-champion of the Elite world (2019) and the first non-European world champion (2000). A list of achievements that would make any sports federation dream.
A challenge to the government
Noting this paradox, MP Guy Marius Sagna sent a written question to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko questioning the government on the fate of the Senegalese Scrabble Federation.
In his correspondence, the elected representative recalls that the Senegalese players, during the 53rd Scrabble World Championships held in Trois-Rivières (Canada) in July 2025, received no support from the state. "What a gift of self," he writes, saluting the courage and patriotism of these forgotten athletes.
Guy Marius Sagna asked the Minister of Sports several questions: "What budget has been allocated to Scrabble in 2024 and 2025? What budget is planned for 2026? What policy does the Ministry intend to adopt to strengthen this discipline? Is collaboration with the Ministry of National Education envisaged to integrate Scrabble into schools?"
Scrabble, a mirror of the “forgotten federations”
Through this plea, the MP also highlights a broader issue: that of sports federations, the so-called "poor relations" of Senegalese sport, often overshadowed by football. Scrabble, despite its exceptional results, symbolizes this glaring inequality in the treatment of sports disciplines in Senegal.
"The government has given them too little," emphasizes Guy Marius Sagna, calling for a real policy of change in favor of these champions who, without resources, continue to lift Senegal to the top of the world podiums.
