Série d'agressions : Les ferrailleurs de Thiès dans le désarroi
Scrap metal dealers located near the Fabri-Métal factory, at the entrance to the town of Thiès, on the road to Dakar, are sounding the alarm over the increase in attacks against them.
For several weeks now, they have been denouncing growing insecurity around the country's scrap metal collection and processing areas. On Tuesday, October 13, 2025, Yalli, a young scrap metal dealer working for his father, had just left the factory after pocketing a large sum of two million (2,000,000) FCFA. He was unfortunately the victim of an attack during a short motorcycle ride, less than 500 meters from the Fabri-Métal factory.
A criminal, riding a motorcycle, intentionally hit him, before stealing the bag containing the money and disappearing into thin air. "This attack is not an isolated case," said a spokesperson for the scrap metal dealers. He also emphasized: "We live in total insecurity. More than 20 scrap metal dealers have suffered similar attacks around the factory. After collecting scrap metal for several days, we leave the factory in trucks, and once outside, we are the target of criminals, which constitutes a constant danger to our lives."
Scrap metal dealers are urgently appealing to the state and plant authorities to take safety measures in these crucial areas. They are urging the strengthening of security measures around collection sites, increased surveillance, and awareness-raising among industry stakeholders.
