Supposée éruption volcanique imminente à Dakar : Un fake news
On the social network TikTok, videos announcing a volcanic eruption in Dakar in a few days have shocked many Senegalese. But according to experts contacted by RFI, this is fake news.
"Red alert in Dakar: Scientists confirm that the dormant volcano beneath Dakar could erupt in 5 days," we see in a video spoofing the France 24 channel. But this is not the case. The video was fabricated.
According to geologist and natural risk prevention expert Professor Papa Goumba Lô, there is no scientific evidence to support this, quite the contrary. "For a volcanic eruption to occur, there must be at least several years of warning signs. However, this has not been the case since the last earthquake in Dakar in 1984," he told RFI's Info Vérif.
According to him, the TikTok video was only intended to scare the population. "This video is completely false. It was fabricated to scare and put the people of Dakar in a situation of unfounded threat," the professor added.
