Thiaroaye 44 : Le ministère de l’Éducation nationale ordonne une leçon nationale sur les tirailleurs sénégalais, le 1er décembre
As part of the commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the Thiaroye massacre, the Senegalese Ministry of National Education has issued an official directive requiring all schools in the country to hold a lesson on the Senegalese riflemen. This educational activity will take place on Monday, December 1, 2025, during the first period of classes.
This initiative follows a directive from the Prime Minister's office and reflects a desire to strengthen students' historical and civic awareness. The Thiaroye massacre, which occurred in 1944, remains a painful episode in military and colonial history that has long been silenced.
A national teaching guide to harmonize teaching
To ensure consistent implementation, the ministry established a committee tasked with developing a single teaching guide for teachers in both public and private schools. This document outlines the objectives, content, methods, and facilitation of the lesson, enabling all students in the country to benefit from quality instruction on this pivotal episode in Senegalese history.
Firm instructions to the regional education authorities
In his letter marked "Very urgent", the supervising minister invites the Academy inspectorates to ensure the proper distribution of the teaching sheet in all establishments under their jurisdiction; to supervise the effective organization of the session in all schools and high schools; to produce a summary report on the conduct of the lesson; a report to be sent to the general secretariat of the ministry, no later than December 5, 2025.
The ministry insists on the "diligent execution" of these instructions, recalling the highly symbolic nature of this commemoration.
A duty to remember reaffirmed
With this decision, the State intends to remind younger generations of the importance of the sacrifice of the Senegalese riflemen, who have often been forgotten. The national lesson of December 1st thus constitutes a powerful act of transmission, designed to permanently inscribe this chapter of history in the collective consciousness.
