THIAROYE RISQUE DE « DISPARAÎTRE DE LA CARTE DE DAKAR » SI RIEN N’EST FAIT (MAIRE)
During his appearance on Radio Senegal's En Vérité program, El Hadji Mamadou Ndiaye, mayor of Thiaroye-sur-Mer, expressed his concerns about the alarming environmental situation in his town. He cited two major phenomena: the rapid advance of the sea and recurring flooding, believing that Thiaroye could "disappear from the map of Dakar" if no action is taken.
The mayor emphasized that coastal erosion, although a natural phenomenon linked to global warming, is worsening in this area due to the lack of protective measures. "When we were young, the shore was still very far away. Today, it is right in front of our doors. At this rate, Thiaroye is truly threatened," he said.
Regarding the flooding, Mr. Ndiaye blamed the lack of urban planning. He explained that the installations were built without prior structuring, in an area isolated between the sea and the road, and without a sanitation plan. "The water therefore has no outlet," he explained.
He also regretted that the major sanitation works undertaken in the suburbs did not take into account Thiaroye, which does not have specific pipes for water evacuation. According to him, this exclusion increases the vulnerability of the municipality. He called on the authorities to intervene quickly in the face of a threat he described as "real and imminent."
