Thiès ouvre son nouveau marché au poisson, ce samedi 24 janvier : Une infrastructure moderne, sécurisée, pour 1,887 milliard FCFA
The official opening of the new central fish market in Thiès (MCP Thiès), scheduled for this Saturday, January 24, 2026, was the subject of a preparatory meeting of the Regional Development Committee (CRD), chaired by the deputy governor of the Thiès region in charge of Development, Ababacar Sadikh Niang.
A modern, secure, and organized market, capable of stimulating local employment and entrepreneurship, addresses a legitimate aspiration of the people throughout the Thiès region, emphasizes the deputy head of the regional executive. According to him, it will also help to decongest the central market of Thiès and the streets occupied by small-scale fishmongers, making traffic flow more smoothly and safely, and improving working conditions for those involved in the market and the marketing of seafood products.
Moreover, by improving hygiene and product preservation conditions, this infrastructure will contribute sustainably to food security, public health and the proper and regular supply of fishery and other related products to our dear populations.
This gem, acquired with the support of ANAM, perfectly meets the infrastructure standards required for public access, according to the governor. The CRD emphasized the need for a collective strategy to promote, strengthen, and maximize the economic and social benefits of the market, not only in the short term but also for future generations.
Faced with the region's numerous assets in terms of potential, paradoxically coupled with the absence of a modern market capable of properly regulating the distribution of fishery products in the region and within the country, the National Maritime Affairs Agency (ANAM), under the supervision of the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, has committed to building the MCP-Thiès. This project is entirely financed and executed by ANAM.
Covering an area of nearly 3,200 m², the market boasts modern infrastructure meeting international standards. Its main components include: two fish market halls (1,400 m²); a cold storage facility; an administrative building; and a two-story (ground floor + 2) accommodation building. Additional facilities include: a mosque; public restrooms; a guard post; kiosks; a water tower and internal water system; parking areas; and a 250 kVA emergency generator.
According to the governor, by building this central fish market, the government is affirming its commitment to making Thiès a prosperous, innovative, and inclusive region. He also believes this jewel represents much more than a simple place for trade. It is, he says, the result of a collective ambition characterized by: the modernization of seafood sales infrastructure; the improvement of working conditions for fishmongers and traders; and the guarantee to consumers of easy access to quality products in a dignified and hygienic environment.
