Thiès sollicite l’accueil du défilé du 4 avril 2026
The ordinary session of the Thiès City Council on Thursday, December 4, 2025, was marked by the adoption of several major decisions. These included a resolution officially supporting Thiès' bid to host the national celebration of Independence Day on April 4, 2026.
This motion was unanimously approved by the city councilors present. In his address, the mayor of Thiès, Dr. Babacar Diop, recalled the city's historical role in organizing this national holiday. In 1979, Thiès hosted the Independence Day celebrations for the first time under the presidency of the late Léopold Sédar Senghor, then President of the Republic and the city's first elected mayor.
A quarter of a century later, in 2004, the city was once again chosen by President Abdoulaye Wade to host the official April 4th ceremony. Although the parade ultimately did not take place there, this designation nevertheless allowed the city to benefit from a significant urban development program.
Today, Thiès boasts one of the country's largest and most modern avenues, suitable for hosting large-scale national events. For 2026, several ongoing projects will be expanded, including the modernization and increased density of public lighting.
In addition to this, there is the installation of traffic lights, the rehabilitation of Place de France, the paving of Avenue Caen, the repair of several road axes, the implementation of a municipal SAMU project, the creation of a municipal library, as well as the deployment of training and financing programs for women.
