Thiès : Une commerçante grugée de 26 millions de FCFA par un présumé charlatan
The Thiès court of summary jurisdiction heard the case on Friday between S. Seck, a watermelon vendor, and A. Sy, a 34-year-old healer. Sy is being prosecuted for fraud and quackery after allegedly swindling his victim out of 26 million CFA francs under the guise of mystical rituals.
S. Seck's misfortune began when her business encountered difficulties. Seeking solutions, she sought the services of A. Sy in the Mbour 3 district. According to her statements, the healer promised her rapid prosperity, even offering to multiply her money.
The victim recounts that she initially gave 1,500,000 FCFA to the accused in the hope of receiving double that amount. After a "mystical bath," A. Sy gave her a suitcase supposedly containing banknotes, but strictly forbade her from opening it under penalty of going blind.
Under the sway of fear and a state of submission she attributed to a spell, the woman continued to pay astronomical sums for supposed alms intended for her business and her sick child. To satisfy the healer's demands, she admitted to having drawn on the funds of the rotating savings and credit associations (tontines) she managed, totaling 26 million FCFA in losses.
The defendant admits to 17 million and the purchase of a vehicle
In court, A. Sy disputed the plaintiff's version of events, while acknowledging that he had received 17 million FCFA. He claimed to have fulfilled his part of the agreement by providing medical care for the plaintiff's three children. The defendant admitted to using the funds to purchase oxen and camels for sacrifices, as well as to acquire a personal vehicle.
The victim, for her part, persisted in her accusations: "He bewitched me. Since that bath at his house, I gave him everything he asked for without thinking, and I saw no improvement in my business."
The lawyer for the plaintiff, Mr. Sy, condemned the defendant's behavior, calling him "a danger to society", and demanded 35 million FCFA in damages.
The public prosecutor, finding the charges of quackery and fraud proven, requested a two-year prison sentence. The defense, represented by attorney Sène, argued for acquittal based on reasonable doubt, maintaining that the evidence of fraudulent activity was insufficient.
The court has taken the case under advisement. The judgment will be delivered on January 2, 2026.
