Tivaouane – Marché Keur Matar: Les commerçants suspendent le paiement des taxes municipales
Traders at the Keur Matar market in Tivaouane have decided to suspend the payment of municipal taxes until concrete solutions are found to the problems of unsanitary conditions and insecurity plaguing this commercial space. The announcement was made on Monday, September 22, 2025.
"The market lacks basic facilities: no gate, no lighting, and no security guard. This situation is fueling an increase in theft," denounces Lamine Dème, a trader representative. Adding to these security shortcomings is a worrying lack of maintenance. The toilets are deemed unusable, while the market area is littered with garbage, exposing users and local residents to serious health risks.
"This space is our working tool. Its abandonment jeopardizes our business and the safety of our customers," insist the merchants, pointing out that the market is vital to the local economy and provides a livelihood for many families. Despite several approaches to the municipality, no improvement has been noted, hence their decision to make the resumption of tax payments conditional on the rapid satisfaction of their grievances.
When questioned, Badou Ndiaye, a municipal official, acknowledged the legitimacy of the demands, praised the patience of the traders and called for constructive dialogue under the leadership of the mayor, Demba Diop Sy.
