Touba : Se faisant passer pour un chrétien voulant se convertir, A. Diédhiou escroque un célèbre marabout et vide le compte Wave de son chambellan
The Research Brigade of the Touba gendarmerie company has unmasked a con artist of a particular kind. A. Diédhiou, a Muslim, had devised a formidable scheme: to pose as a Christian wishing to embrace Islam in order to infiltrate the entourage of a marabout and rob his followers.
It all began on a Saturday in March 2026, around 4 p.m. The individual presented himself at the home of the marabout SC Fall under the false identity of Philippe Diatta, a Christian seeking conversion.
Touched by this gesture, the marabout's entourage welcomed him with open arms, offered him gifts, and provided him with food and lodging for several days. The false convert took advantage of this hospitality to build relationships of trust with the disciples.
On March 14, 2026, he put his plan into action. Taking advantage of an outing with the talibés to deliver the ndogou (a large meal) to the khalifa, he borrowed the phone of S. Modou B. Ba, the marabout's right-hand man in charge of collecting funds for the community, under the pretext of calling his older brother to convince him to convert as well. He then disappeared with the phone.
Back home, Serigne Modou Bousso Ba tried to retrieve his phone. But "Philippe Diatta" had vanished and was no longer answering calls. Meanwhile, the perpetrator had already emptied his victim's Wave account, which contained over 600,000 FCFA, according to Seneweb sources close to the prosecutor's office.
He then broke into SMB Ba's WhatsApp account, retrieved the saved contacts and contacted the marabout's relatives to extort money from them in his name.
After several days of fruitless searching, the victim contacted the Touba Research Brigade. Following a meticulous manhunt, the gendarmes managed to locate and arrest the suspect.
A. Diédhiou was presented to prosecutor Amary Faye, head of the Diourbel prosecutor's office, for theft, fraud and other charges.
