Touba : Le Magal validé à l'unanimité pour son inscription au Patrimoine culturel immatériel de l'UNESCO
A historic step was taken on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, in Touba, with the unanimous validation of the application file of the Magal of Touba for its inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The extended consultation session dedicated to preparing the application dossier concluded at the Cheikhoul Khadim residence (Keur Serigne Touba) in Daroul Mannan. This historic meeting, which lasted all day, saw high-level participation from the Ministry of Culture, experts from the National Heritage Directorate, representatives of various structures within the Mouride community in Senegal and the diaspora, as well as eminent experts.
She also brought together representatives of the general caliph of the Mourides and the driving forces of religious and educational institutions in Touba, notably the Cheikh Ahmadoul Khadim University and the Dahira Rawdu Rayahine.
Unanimous approval of the application file
The application for inscription was presented and unanimously approved by acclamation, demonstrating exemplary social cohesion around this community and national project. This approval represents a major step forward in the process of international recognition of the Magal.
During the technical sessions, experts such as Serigne Mame Mor Amdi Mbacké, Serigne Souhybou Kébé, and other speakers highlighted the heritage aspects of the Magal, its associated social practices, human values, and cultural expressions. These elements form the basis of the dossier that will be submitted to UNESCO.
Under the guidance of experts, including Dr. Aminata Diop and Serigne Sam Bousso, participants analyzed potential risks and threats to establish priority safeguarding measures, both community-based and institutional. This approach aims to guarantee the sustainability and authenticity of the Magal for future generations.
The project's success hinges on a rigorous strategy for compiling the necessary documentation, in accordance with the guidelines of Oumar Badiane, Director of National Cultural Heritage, and Dr. Massamba Guèye. The organizers from the Turaas entity emphasized that the objective of these consultations was to ensure a faithful and comprehensive representation of the spiritual and cultural significance of the Magal, fully aligned with UNESCO's international standards.
The session was closed by speeches from the representative of the general khalifa of the Mourides and the coordinator of Turaas, Serigne Ahmadou Badawiyyou Mbacké, and Serigne Khadim Ngom, in an atmosphere of fervor and prayers for the success of this noble community and national undertaking.
This day marks a decisive step in the official process of consecrating the Magal of Touba as a universal heritage, transcending borders to embody the values of peace, work and faith dear to the Mouride community.
