Police officers from the Djinack Bara outpost, supported by the Karang special police station, intercepted a cart carrying 150 kg of Indian hemp (ten bags) from Gambia last Monday after being followed. The suspects, an 8-year-old driver - who fled the scene - and the drug owner, Djibril Diamé (33 years old, resident of Djinack), were arrested and taken into custody.
But the affair quickly took a bizarre turn, Libération reported in its Wednesday edition. Informed of Diamé's arrest, the people of Djinack Bara and neighboring villages gathered in front of the police station. After negotiations for his release failed—despite the intervention of Imam Ratib—they resorted to violence against the already understaffed police officers, even with the support of two National Parks officers.
Faced with the unfavorable balance of power, the station chief received instructions from the command and the prosecutor's office to secure the drugs in a secret location and to release the arrested persons (all identified and photographed) to avoid a harmful confrontation. Djibril Diamé was thus able to escape with the help of the villagers.
The cargo was finally transferred to Massarinko under heavy escort. The investigation is continuing, Libération adds.
