Un demi-milliard F CFA en faux billets saisis : trois arrestations dont un policier à la retraite
The Dakar Urban Security force carried out a large-scale operation, thwarting the plan of a counterfeiting organization that was preparing to flood the black market with one million dollars in counterfeit bills, or more than half a billion CFA francs, according to L'Observateur.
According to initial findings of the investigation, as detailed by the newspaper of the Groupe Futurs Médias (GFM), the perpetrators had set up a clandestine workshop equipped with sophisticated equipment (machines, inks, and specialized papers) in a secluded location in the suburbs. After a lengthy infiltration and discreet surveillance, the police launched a surprise raid. They seized a million dollars in counterfeit currency, as well as all the equipment, including a sophisticated counting machine, and a vehicle.
Three suspects were arrested: Mr. Dione (69 years old), Mr. Sarr (50 years old) and T. Diankha (61 years old).
The twist is significant, notes the Gfm headline: T. Diankha, "considered the mastermind of the network", turned out to be "a retired former police officer".
Confronted with the evidence, the accused confessed. They were taken into custody for conspiracy and attempted production of counterfeit banknotes legal tender in Senegal and abroad, pending their appearance before the public prosecutor, the same source added.
