Une divorcée étrangle son bébé né d'une relation interdite avec son beau-frère
A case of infanticide has shaken the Gadiaga region, particularly the commune of Diawara in the Bakel department. A divorced woman and mother of three accuses her brother-in-law of impregnating her. She gave birth and then strangled the newborn girl. Tried before the criminal chamber of the Tambacounda High Court, she faces up to five years in prison.
The criminal chamber of the Tambacounda High Court heard a case of infanticide yesterday that had shocked the town of Diawara. According to the case file, on the night of August 5, 2024, K. Traoré, a 32-year-old divorced mother of three, allegedly gave birth alone in her bedroom without medical assistance. She cut the child's umbilical cord with scissors. After cleaning the area, she allegedly strangled the baby girl before wrapping her in a towel and then informing her mother.
Having committed the act, she called the paramedic from the health post, who was a relative. He, on a motorcycle, transported the lifeless body to the health post. Alerted by the midwife, the police arrived at the scene and discovered the infant's body, still wrapped in a towel, thus opening the way for an investigation.
The confession and the line of defense
K. Traoré was arrested and taken into custody. During questioning, she initially admitted to the charges against her: “I was seeing my brother-in-law, AT. We had sexual relations in his room when his wife was away. I found out I was pregnant in January 2024. No one knew, except for the person in charge, AT. On the evening of August 5, 2024, around 7 p.m., I experienced intense and sharp pains in my stomach and head. I went to my room and gave birth.”
In the dock of the criminal court in Tamba, however, she changed her story for her defense, claiming that the child was stillborn: "The baby did not cry at birth. The father of the child, my brother-in-law, made advances to me which I could not resist in the absence of his wife. I tried to hide the pregnancy," she said.
During his closing arguments, the deputy prosecutor requested a five-year prison sentence. The defense, represented by Ms. Lady Ba, dismissed the contents of the police report, citing a lack of evidence, before requesting the defendant's acquittal.
The criminal court of Tamba has adjourned the case for deliberation until March 12th.
