Vaste réseau de fraude bancaire démantelé : 100 millions F CFA volés, la SR de Colobane arrête 4 cybercriminels
The Dakar research unit has just dealt a serious blow to financial cybercrime in Senegal. Following a complaint against persons unknown for alleged bank fraud, the gendarmes conducted a thorough investigation which resulted in the dismantling of a network specializing in financial scams, Seneweb learned from Colonel Ibrahima Ndiaye.
The network members had set up a well-elaborate system. They manufactured fake national identity cards to make irregular changes to subscribers on previously targeted telephone numbers.
This first step then allowed them to reset the victims' access codes and make fraudulent transfers from their bank accounts to Orange Money and Wave accounts created exclusively for their illicit activities.
After several weeks of investigation, the operation launched by the gendarmerie led to successful searches of the suspects' homes. Law enforcement seized six counterfeit national identity cards, numerous SIM cards intended for fraud, a counterfeit 10,000 CFA franc note, and stamps used to falsify administrative documents.
The financial investigation also revealed that the accused had recently rented a bar-restaurant, financed entirely by the proceeds of their fraudulent activities. The total estimated losses exceed one hundred million CFA francs, an amount that testifies to the scale of their operations.
Four people have been arrested. They are being prosecuted for conspiracy, forgery and use of forged documents, phone line phishing, and money laundering. The investigation is ongoing to identify any accomplices and other potential victims.
The National Gendarmerie reminds the public that its call centre remains reachable free of charge at the numbers 800 00 20 20 or 123 for any useful information or to report any suspicious activity.
