Violence policière : une autre plainte contre des agents du commissariat central
The case of the students arrested during the police operation on February 9th has taken a new turn. According to information obtained by EnQuête, a young lawyer has filed a complaint with the public prosecutor's office against officers of the Dakar Central Police Station. These officers are accused of "violence, assault, insults, and obstruction of the practice of law."
The events date back to the night of February 9, 2026. Appointed to assist some of the arrested students, lawyer Magatte Sène arrived at the police station around 11:30 p.m. "After the usual formalities with the station chief, he requested a meeting with his clients. The two students in question were taken to the public area, where there were parents of other students," the newspaper's sources reported.
Mr. Sène then requested a more suitable location to meet with his clients in complete confidentiality, in accordance with applicable law. This was a step too far for the police. The situation reportedly escalated, with the police commissioner intervening and ordering his officers to remove the lawyer. In his complaint, Mr. Sène claims he was jostled and insulted by officers as he was being led out, in front of witnesses.
This incident deeply shocked several members of the bar, who considered issuing a statement before deciding against it at the request of the Bar President, who reportedly favored a more conciliatory approach. "What happened is unacceptable. It constitutes a serious attack on the honor and dignity of a colleague, as well as on the rights of the defense," declared one of the sources interviewed by the newspaper EnQuête.
According to him, law enforcement must bear in mind that lawyers are not their adversaries. "We are officers of the court, each entrusted with a mission defined by law. It is unacceptable that a lawyer, in the exercise of his duties, should be subjected to violence or degrading treatment by police officers," he asserts.
