This Saturday, April 4, 2026, marks the 66th anniversary of Senegal's accession to international sovereignty. In Ziguinchor, preparations for the festivities are well underway, as evidenced by the dress rehearsal held at the site dedicated to the ceremony.

This dress rehearsal is part of the actual preparation for the event, stressed Colonel Cheikh Gueye, commander of Military Zone No. 5 (Comzone). Accompanied by the command of the Southern Gendarmerie Legion and other members of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) of the region, he emphasized that the organization is perfectly aligned with the national theme: "The Defense and Security Forces, partners of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Dakar 2026."

A methodical three-step preparation

Colonel Cheikh Gueye noted that preparations began several months ago. For nearly five months, the army has organized numerous activities. Under the authority of the Regional Governor, committees were established to ensure the smooth running of the celebration.

The preparation was structured around three key stages. First, training for children, youth groups, and schools, supervised by the security forces. Second, the dress rehearsal, which has just concluded. Finally, the official parade, scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2026.

More than 2,000 participants and a large-scale motorized parade

For this 66th anniversary in Ziguinchor, the scale of the parade promises to be exceptional. More than 2,000 participants, both military and civilian, are expected on the Boulevard des 54 mètres.

This year, the deployment includes approximately 600 members of the security forces and 1,400 civilians. The motorized parade will comprise at least 73 vehicles, including 58 for the security forces and 15 for the civilian sector, explained Colonel Gueye, expressing his satisfaction after the final adjustments.

Despite the ongoing rehabilitation work on the avenue, all necessary measures have been taken. Thanks to the support of the Governor, Ageroute, and the municipal and prefectural services, the teams were able to prepare and clear the site to ensure optimal conditions.

Colonel Cheikh Gueye concluded by inviting the population to turn out in large numbers to celebrate with their defense forces. Numerous distinguished guests from the region and neighboring countries are also expected for this celebration.
