Ziguinchor : deux ateliers consumés par un incendie au marché Saint-Maur (Boucotte)
A fire completely destroyed two workshops at the Boucotte market in Ziguinchor, specifically at the Saint-Maur-des-Fossés market. The fire broke out around 3 a.m. on the night of Wednesday, January 27th to Thursday, January 28th, 2026, according to reports.
The flames completely consumed both workshops and all the equipment inside them.
The first victim is Kéba Diémé, owner of a carpentry workshop. He was unable to salvage anything: all the wood, whether already shaped or stored, was reduced to ashes. Beyond the finished pieces and those in progress, he lost a stock of planks purchased the day before the fire for 350,000 FCFA.
The second victim, Samba Ndiaye, owns an upholstery workshop. He, too, was unable to save anything. Reached by phone, Mr. Ndiaye explained that the fire started from an electrical pole located near their workshop. According to his account, the first residents to arrive on the scene didn't dare approach to try to extinguish the flames, for fear of electrocution. This hesitation resulted in the loss of all the stored goods, including numerous customer orders ready for delivery.
Now destitute, these two craftsmen are appealing for help and requesting support from the authorities in the hope of resuming their activities.
