Rapper Simon Kouka urged young people in Ziguinchor and the southern zone to fully play their role as watchdogs against mining companies. According to him, it is imperative that young people get involved to prevent environmental degradation and ensure the rehabilitation of quarries after exploitation.
"The observation is that there are a lot of companies that exploit and then abandon the quarries. This causes a worrying degradation of the environment. Young people must take the lead in the villages and regions where these activities are carried out, and demand that companies no longer abandon the sites or dump their waste there," said the artist, recalling that this illegal situation causes many inconveniences for the population.
He particularly warned about the health consequences: "It's our cows, our sheep, our animals that are getting sick because of this pollution. Young people absolutely must do this monitoring work so that each quarry is rehabilitated after exploitation."
Selected by the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum, and Mines to lead an awareness campaign, Simon Kouka also encourages young people to take a greater interest in the mining sector. "Mines represent an enormous source of wealth, beyond oil and gas. Young people must seek information, contact the relevant services, and explore the job opportunities this sector can offer," he added.
Furthermore, the artist calls on mining companies to invest in local development: supporting women's empowerment, supporting youth in culture, participating in education by building or rehabilitating schools, and providing school supplies. "People must also share in the profits these companies make from mining," concluded Simon Kouka.
