Ziguinchor : Les vendeurs de viande de porcs du marché Tilène exigent la libération de leur président
Pork vendors at the Tilène market in Ziguinchor held a press conference on August 26, 2025, to demand the release of their president, Laurent Ernest Tendeng, who has been in custody since August 14, 2025, at the Ziguinchor House of Arrest and Correction (MAC). This arrest follows the lynching of a suspected pig thief in the outlying Lyndiane neighborhood, which occurred during the night of August 9-10, 2025.
According to Valery Christian Ndecky, deputy treasurer and spokesperson for the pork sellers' association, Tendeng's arrest is unjustified. He explains that their president posted a video on social media to set the record straight after the alleged thief, who was brutally beaten and filmed in a video that went viral, claimed to be a member of their association. "Our president has only denied these statements. We don't know this alleged thief; he's never worked here," Ndecky denounced during the press briefing held at their workplace at the Mbaam market in Tilène.
Tendeng is being held with four other young people from Lyndiane, arrested after the alleged thief filed a complaint, who reportedly succumbed to his injuries. The pork sellers, supported by their comrades, consider this incarceration "unjust" and are calling on the authorities to obtain the immediate release of their president and the other young people involved. This case is part of a broader context of tensions in Lyndiane, where recurring thefts of livestock, particularly pigs, sheep, and goats, are frustrating residents, who sometimes resort to taking justice into their own hands. The Tilène sellers are calling for a swift and fair resolution to this case to ease tensions.
