Ziguinchor, nouveau pôle de développement de l’athlétisme sénégalais

From October 24 to November 1, 2025, the natural region of Casamance is hosting an athletics coaching training program. Around thirty trainees are participating in this session. This is a strategic choice by the Senegalese Athletics Federation (FSA) to strengthen local skills and promote Ziguinchor's sporting potential.

The first vice-president of the FSA, El Hadj Bara Thiam, justifies this choice by the need to meet a recurring need for technicians in this part of the country, but also by the desire to boost sports practice in the South. "It is in an effort to fill the deficit of technicians in this very vast area, but also to boost the region so that it invests in the training of young people. This fighting mentality is essential fuel for a sport as demanding as athletics. We want to unearth young talents capable of filling the ranks of sprinters, middle-distance runners, cross-country runners, throwers, or jumpers."

Ziguinchor has several major assets: a warm and sunny climate almost year-round, conducive to outdoor sports, and a young population known for its tenacity and taste for challenge. For the federation, athletics in Ziguinchor relies on a pool of natural talent and motivated youth. Investment in training, supervision, equipment, and the organization of local competitions will, it believes, allow the region to fully exploit its assets.

"Ziguinchor has everything it takes to become a major center for Senegalese athletics, capable of producing champions who will proudly carry the colors of Senegal," says El Hadj Bara Thiam.
