Ziguinchor : Vaste opération de saupoudrage nocturne contre la prolifération des moustiques et les maladies transmissibles
The Ziguinchor City Council has launched a large-scale nighttime spraying operation to combat waterborne diseases and those transmitted by mosquitoes and other insect bites. The goal is to eliminate the vectors of serious diseases such as malaria, dengue fever (which has recently appeared in the region), and Rift Valley fever.
The operation is entrusted to the hygiene service which carried out phase 1, dedicated to the end of the rainy season, in order to eradicate the factors promoting the proliferation of mosquitoes and malaria at the end of this year.
Diénaba Fofana, the deputy mayor in charge of hygiene and sanitation, explained the necessity of this action: “After the rainy season, there is a strong proliferation of insects and mosquitoes due to humidity and unsanitary conditions. Malaria generally takes hold from May to November/December, causing an increase in cases of the disease.”
Captain Mbaye Ly, head of the regional hygiene brigade in Ziguinchor, also raised concerns about nuisance and public health. He explained that "Mosquitoes are very prevalent, especially in the evening. These insects are vectors of serious diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and Rift Valley fever, which is currently epidemic."
The campaign aims to prevent these public health problems and improve the well-being of residents, Captain Ly explained.
