Reigning African champions South Africa and Nigeria will miss the quarter-finals of the U-20 World Cup. In the round of 16 on Wednesday, the two African champions were eliminated by Colombia and Argentina respectively.
The South Africans, who had dominated possession, fell victim to Colombia's lack of realism and lost (3-1). Meanwhile, the Nigerians suffered a heavy defeat against Argentina (0-4). The South Americans were already leading at half-time (2-0) thanks to goals from Alejo Sarco (3rd) and Maher Carrizo (23rd). In the second half, Diego Placente's charges confirmed their superiority by scoring two more goals through Maher Carrizo (53rd), who scored twice, and Mateo Silvetti (66th).
With these eliminations, Africa now has only one representative in the competition: Morocco, which will face South Korea this Thursday.
