A few days after Senegal's victory at the Africa Cup of Nations, Pape Gueye has finally broken his silence. The Villarreal midfielder, who scored the decisive goal in the final, gave his account of the numerous incidents that marred a match as tense as it was spectacular.
This final will remain one of the most chaotic in recent AFCON history. Delays, refereeing disputes, tensions in the stands and on the sidelines, not to mention the penalty missed by Brahim Díaz in the final seconds of regulation time (90+24th).
Meanwhile, clashes had broken out between stewards and Senegalese supporters, plunging the match into an electric atmosphere.
But at the end of the night, it was indeed the Lions who triumphed, thanks to a liberating goal from Pape Guèye in extra time (94th).
Four days after this continental triumph, the 26-year-old spoke to COPE radio, notably about the interruption of the match and the Senegalese players' visit to the locker room.
“We felt that what was happening was unfair, that’s why we went back,” he explained. “It was Sadio Mané who asked us to continue playing. Then everyone talked and the match was able to resume,” continued the former Marseille player, specifying that he didn’t know the exact exchanges that had taken place in the locker room.
Pape Gueye also addressed the controversial refereeing decisions at the end of the match. "After our goal, the referee didn't consult VAR. And when Brahim Diaz missed his penalty, we thought it was our moment," he explained, emphasizing the mental intensity of those crucial moments. Ironically, the Senegalese player will face the Real Madrid player again this weekend in La Liga.
Finally questioned about the controversy surrounding Édouard Mendy's infamous towel, which some saw as an attempt at occult practices or black magic, Pape Guèye categorically denied it. "I saw the footage after the match. Mendy didn't mention it to me. So much happened during that final, between the referee, the stands, and this towel business," he declared before concluding unequivocally: "Black magic? No, that's not true."
With this media appearance, Pape Guèye wanted to calm the debates and refocus attention on the essential: Senegal's historic victory and a title won at the end of an extraordinary final.
