[Analyse tactique] l'aspiration, la redoutable technique égyptienne à éviter par le Sénégal (photos)
Winning, nothing but winning. Just like in 2021, the Egyptian national team has traded beautiful football for pragmatism. In Morocco, the team led by Hossam Hassan advanced thanks to a solid defensive organization, effective set pieces, cunning, and a clinical attack. Against Senegal in the semi-final, the same ingredients will be on display. But this year, Egypt has added a new tactical dimension to its attacking game: the 'draft'. A formidable and, until now, unstoppable technique that the Senegalese team will have to contain if they hope to reach the final.
The video analysts from Benin and Ivory Coast must have noticed it, but were powerless to do anything. Indeed, since the start of the competition, Egypt has repeatedly tried to catch opposing defenses off guard using the "draft" technique. This involves creating a gap in the opposing defense by having a central player drop deep. This player then feigns a pass to draw an opposing defender out of position, before launching another player behind the disoriented defense where the gap has been created.
This technique has proven so formidable and unstoppable because defenders are focused on Egypt's two biggest stars, Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, who draw all the attention precisely to act as decoys for this infiltration tactic. When the two stars drop back from their central positions, they constantly force their opponents to follow them, creating space that is then exploited by other Egyptian players. Often, it's the attacking midfielder or the Egyptian full-backs who transform into wingers during possession, allowing Salah and Marmoush to exploit the half-spaces.
Egypt's first goal in this competition was scored in this way. For the equalizer against Zimbabwe, it was Marmoush who was found behind the defense. The Manchester City player's run was made possible by a clever movement from Mostafa Mohamed, who drifted inside, drawing the central defender away from the right flank.

Then, against Benin, the opening goal was achieved thanks to this same technique of drawing the ball in. During a combination down the right flank, Salah drew Olaitan out of position, then played a one-two with right-back Mohamed Hany, who crossed low for Attia's shot into the top corner.

Shortly before that goal, Egypt's first chance was created in the same way, this time on the left. Marmoush dropped deep, creating a gap in the defense which was exploited by left-back Mohamed Hamdi. He crossed for Salah, but the ball was blocked at the last second by the Benin defense.

Against Ivory Coast, Egypt's third goal perfectly illustrates the technique the Pharaohs are employing in every match during this AFCON. In the play, Omar Marmoush once again dropped deep to draw the Ivorian center-back Odilon Kossonou out of position. Kossonou fell for the trap, leaving space behind for Emam Ashour, who then laid the ball off to Salah, who arrived late to finish.

A technique meticulously prepared, practiced, and perfected by Egypt, which they have been using in every match since the start of the tournament. Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush are the stars of the show, but the danger can come from anywhere for the Pharaohs. Hossam Hassan has capitalized on the unpredictability of his lesser-known players. Combined with a rock-solid defense and effectiveness on set pieces, you have a complete team, capable of beating anyone. The Senegalese team has been warned. They will need to be extremely attentive to the runs of the Egyptian central strikers and the counter-movements that will follow from their other players.
Against Egypt, intelligent movement and overlapping runs will be crucial in marking Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. Kalidou Koulibaly and Moussa Niakhaté will be responsible for this task if the two Egyptians are in the center of the defense, while Idrissa Gana Gueye and another midfielder (Pape Gueye, Habib Diarra, or Pathé Ciss) will cover for them if they drop deep.
