ANSU FATI ENFLAMME MONACO, MAIS LE CLUB RESTE PRUDENT
Ansu Fati is on fire in Ligue 1. Six goals in five games for Monaco. A brace against Nice, another against Metz off the bench. The fastest player to reach five goals in the French league since 1948. A record that hadn't been broken for seventy-seven years. On loan from FC Barcelona with a purchase option set at €11 million, the Spanish winger seemed to have found his paradise on the Côte d'Azur. The question was burning: would Monaco exercise the option? The answer is now in.
An understandable caution
Sporting director Thiago Scuro has decided to wait and see. No immediate decision. No hasty activation of the purchase option despite the player's exceptional performances. "What matters is to continue to give Ansu the conditions to get playing time and become an important and regular player for Monaco." he explained during the presentation of new coach Sébastien Pocognoli. "The commercial aspect is not important at the moment. When the time is right, we will make a decision."
This restraint may be surprising given the statistics, but it reflects a cautious approach. Fati is coming off several difficult years: a slump at Barcelona, a failed loan spell at Brighton, and repeated injuries. Monaco doesn't want to rush into a player who has yet to prove his consistency over time. Scuro insists: "The goal is performance and keeping him on the pitch." The implication is that until he has gone several months without a relapse, nothing will be finalized.
Fati's performances have not escaped the attention of Spain coach Luis de la Fuente . "He's scored five or six goals, and we've been evaluating him. Ansu is on the list, and that's interesting," the coach said. A return to the national team would signal a true renaissance for the former Barcelona prodigy. But he still needs to stay fit. Monaco, protected by the agreement signed with Barcelona, can afford to wait.
Ad
Ansu Fati will therefore have to keep his momentum going. The next match: Angers, for Pocognoli's first match on the Monaco bench. Monaco was also hoping to see Paul Pogba's debut there, but a new injury has further delayed his return. For Fati, this is not the time for premature celebrations. That's the game of the transfer window: sometimes, even a feat isn't enough to seal a future.
