RB Leipzig announced on Saturday that midfielder Kevin Kampl (35) would be leaving the club. The Slovenian international wants to spend more time with his family following the death of his brother.
Deeply affected by the sudden death of his brother Seki (51) last October, Kevin Kampl will terminate his contract with RB Leipzig. The 35-year-old midfielder will leave the German club – which he joined in 2017 – during the home match against Bayern Munich on January 17. Having not featured for the team since then, Kampl will return to his hometown of Solingen.
“I will now focus fully on my family,” he said in a statement released on Saturday. The Slovenian international, Leipzig’s sixth most-capped player (283 appearances), played three full matches this season, including his last one in the fifth round of league fixtures (a 1-0 victory against Wolfsburg). His contract was due to run until next summer.
"I don't completely rule out a return to the pitch one day, even though it seems totally unrealistic at the moment, and I want to spend much more time with my loved ones," Kampl added.
