Arbitrage et VAR : la CAF a engagé une refonte en profondeur de ses textes
The Confederation of African Football has undertaken a thorough overhaul of its regulations to strengthen the credibility of African refereeing and its disciplinary bodies. This initiative comes in the wake of incidents that occurred during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which the governing body hopes to avoid in the future.
The organization aims to strengthen trust in referees, video assistant referees (VAR), and judicial bodies such as the Disciplinary Board and the Appeals Committee. It also points out that the refereeing performances observed during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations were unanimously praised, both on the continent and internationally, and aspires to return to that level of excellence.
In this context, CAF maintains its policy of appointing African legal experts recognized for their competence and integrity to its various committees. These appointments, approved by the Executive Committee and the General Assembly, are based on proposals from member associations and zonal unions, with the aim of guaranteeing independence and impartiality.
Its president, Patrice Motsepe, emphasized this Sunday that these structural reforms aim to restore confidence throughout the African refereeing ecosystem. He stressed the need to avoid any recurrence of the dysfunctions observed recently, while specifying that CAF has relied on sports law experts to align its regulations with international standards.
At the same time, the continental body is strengthening its collaboration with FIFA to improve the training of referees, VAR operators, and match commissioners. The objective is clear: to further professionalize these individuals and offer them conditions, particularly salaries, commensurate with their role in the development of the game.
The South African leader also highlighted the progress made in recent years in governance, ethics and transparency, reaffirming a strict zero-tolerance policy against corruption and any form of favoritism between member associations.
CAF also indicated that the disputes related to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final are currently being examined by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. While awaiting the outcome, the governing body remains focused on its ongoing competitions, notably the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, while also supporting the teams that have qualified for the next World Cup, scheduled to be held in North America.
